On December 28, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation, within which they will work on the development of a strategy for virtual assets in Ukraine.

Under the Memorandum, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and SDF will work to develop a modern virtual asset market infrastructure and enhance Ukraine’s status as an innovative digital country in the financial market in Eastern Europe.

“The Ministry of Digital Transformation is working on creating the legal environment for the development of virtual assets in Ukraine. We believe our cooperation with the Stellar Development Foundation will contribute to development of the virtual asset industry and its integration into the global financial ecosystem,” said Oleksandr Bornyakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation for IT Development. “Another important aspect of this cooperation is contributing to the development of the infrastructure for a Ukrainian national digital currency. Most of the world’s leading countries are developing their own national digital currencies. The National Bank of Ukraine has been researching the possibility of CBDC implementation since 2017. It demonstrates Ukraine’s movement towards one of major financial trends. At the Ministry, we aspire to ensure our country’s adaptation to technological innovations and competitiveness in the financial market in Eastern Europe.”

The memorandum outlines the core focus of the partnership as follows:

Cooperation on the development of the virtual assets market in Ukraine;Provision of support to projects related to virtual assets;Implementation and regulation of stablecoin circulation in Ukraine; and,Facilitation of the development of the digital currency of the Central Bank in Ukraine.

“We believe digital assets and national digital currencies are one of the most important innovations of our lifetimes and we are excited to play a role in the creation of Ukraine’s digital asset infrastructure,” said Denelle Dixon, CEO and Executive Director, Stellar Development Foundation. “Through the leadership of the Ministry, Ukraine has demonstrated its commitment to fostering an environment of innovation for the digital economy. We look forward to working with the Ministry and other stakeholders to digitize the hryvnia, to bring Stellar-based tools and services to the people and businesses of Ukraine, and to introduce new partnership opportunities in Ukraine to businesses in the Stellar ecosystem.”

Stellar Development Foundation will officially launch its activity with Ukraine later this month.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Following The Massive BTC Sell-Off, Is The Correction Over?

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Following The Massive BTC Sell-Off, Is The Correction Over?
Bitcoin Price Analysis: Following The Massive BTC Sell-Off, Is The Correction Over?

Bitcoin price saw a day of major volatility after topping out at $34,800 yesterday. From there, the primary cryptocurrency started the week by dropping a sharp 16% to reach as low as $27,800 on Bitstamp in a much-needed retracement following an enormous rally.

As shown on the daily chart below, Bitcoin reached the lower line of the ascending channel.

In our yesterday’s analysis, we mentioned some bearish divergence on the 4-hour timeframe, which seems to have played out today. This retracement filled the CME Futures gap that was left open at $29K. Gaps tend to get filled; however, despite this current gap, there are two more gaps in the range: $24K and $18K, as can be seen on the CME chart below:

Nevertheless, following the huge drop, Bitcoin price has recovered, reaching a local high at $32,200. Since reaching the local high, Bitcoin continued downwards and trading mostly around $31K as of writing these lines.

Further above lies $34,680 (1.414 Fib Extension) and the current ATH at $34,800. $36,000, and $36,235 (short term 1.272 Fib Extension) are next.

On the other side, the first level of support lies at $31,345 (short term .382 Fib). This is followed by $30,300 (short term .5 Fib), $30,000, and $29,300 (short term .618 Fib). Further below lies today’s low at $27,800 – $28,000.

The daily RSI has tumbled from overbought conditions as the bullish momentum starts to fade away slowly. In the shorter term, the 4-hour, the RSI has slipped into bearish territory.

Binance Records New ATH of Daily Trading Volume Above $80 Billion

Binance Records New ATH of Daily Trading Volume Above $80 Billion
Binance Records New ATH of Daily Trading Volume Above $80 Billion

The crypto trading giant has set a new all-time high in 24-trading volume, exceeding $80 billion on both the spot and derivatives platforms. In total, more than $180 billion has been traded across the entire crypto market in the last 24 hours as of press time.

Binance Trading Volume Records New ATH

Tweeting on Monday (Jan. 4, 2021), Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao said that trading volume on the platform was twice its previous all-time high (ATH), reaching over $80 billion. Data from CoinMarketCap showed Binace spot volume at over $23.6 billion, while the derivatives volume was at $56.8 billion.

Such is the extent of the current increase in crypto trading volume that the $80 billion recorded by Binance is two times greater than the figures recorded between Nov. 15th, 2017 and Dec. 15th, 2017, the peak of the 2017 crypto bull run.

However, clearing $80 billion in trade did come at some platform disruption costs to the exchange with Zhao explaining:

“We saw some scaling issues today. We probably will see more issues as we continue to grow. We aren’t prefect, but we will fix them as quickly as we can. We appreciate your understanding and support!”

Exchanges experiencing service disruptions during periods of peak crypto trading activity are a common occurrence. Indeed, U.S. crypto trading giant Coinbase has earned notoriety for going offline when bitcoin’s price experiences a significant surge leaving customers unable to trade.

Back in Dec. 2020, Bitcoin’s run-up above the $20,000 price mark saw both Coinbase and Binance suffer service outages as high trading traffic overwhelmed their systems.

One-third of Crypto Derivatives Liquidations on Binance

Binance also accounted for the largest crypto derivatives wipeout recorded on the day. Over $664 million worth of crypto derivatives were liquidated on Binance, with the majority being over-leveraged long positions.

Indeed, Binance’s figures accounted for over a third of the almost $2 billion in crypto derivatives liquidated in the last 24 hours. Bitcoin’s swift retrace after reaching the $34,000 mark caught traders with over-leveraged longs unawares, resulting in one of the largest cryptocurrency derivatives wipeouts.

Bitcoin’s $5,500 decline to fill the $29,000 CME futures gap and the subsequent retrace of most altcoins also contributed to erasing over $70 billion from the total crypto market capitalization. Despite a resumption in altcoin gains as of press time, the crypto market size is still $150 million away from breaching the $1 trillion milestone.

Bitcoin Is In Its Biggest Bubble Believes Former Merrill Lynch Economist

Founder and chief economist at Rosenberg Research, David Rosenberg, has doubled-down on his narrative that bitcoin, similarly to the stock markets, is in a massive bubble. He warned that another bear market could emerge, similarly to what transpired following the previous bitcoin bull run in 2017.

Bitcoin Is In A Bubble: Rosenberg

In a recent CNBC interview, the former top North American economist at Merrill Lynch said that he’s avoiding getting into bitcoin, especially after its impressive run that resulted in new records above $30,000.

He claimed that such a parabolic price increase in a relatively short period is “highly abnormal.” He went even further, saying that this is BTC’s “biggest market bubble.”

As such, he reaffirmed his stance from mid-December that bitcoin is an “extremely crowded trade.” Rosenberg also questioned the maximum supply of 21 million coins ever to exist, saying that when the asset reaches that cap, the protocol could be altered in order to produce more tokens.

Although he noted that governments are not responsible for bursting any bubbles, Rosenberg predicted that central bank digital currencies will eventually take over the market share of cryptocurrencies.

The economist further explained that BTC performed somewhat similarly during the last bull cycle in 2017. However, once the bubble exploded, the cryptocurrency went on a year-long bear market in 2018.

The Stock Bubble May Not Burst Soon

Rosenberg asserted that the stock markets are also in a bubble as the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 2021 at all-time high levels, while Nasdaq came just inches away from a record. His research company concluded that stocks are about 20% to 30% overvalued “based on a whole bunch of different metrics.”

However, the economist said that stocks might not explode soon because of the global economic situation.

“What’s holding the boot together is basically zero interest rates. As long as rates remain where they are, unless we have a real dramatic pullback in economic activity, this bubble that we’re in is probably any time soon.”

Nevertheless, he warned investors wanting to get in these markets that they will be allocating funds in a bubble.

Instead of aiming to buy stocks and BTC, Rosenberg’s plan includes investing in areas that “are not bubbly and that have a lot of catch-up potential.” He named utilities and energy as such sectors.

Although gold also marked a new all-time high in 2020, he remains bullish on the yellow metal as it has “1/5th of the volatility that bitcoin does.”

CeFi and DeFi will finally meet in 2021 — Let’s hope they hit it off

CeFi and DeFi will finally meet in 2021 — Let’s hope they hit it off
CeFi and DeFi will finally meet in 2021 — Let’s hope they hit it off

The decentralized finance industry undoubtedly has vast potential — the value locked in it has exploded, surpassing $14 billion this month. Though there is speculation over whether decentralized finance is yet another bubble, I believe it is here to stay. How it stays, however, is another matter that depends on how DeFi handles ongoing hacks and other vulnerabilities, how centralized finance incorporates DeFi’s leading features and vice versa.

DeFi encompasses everything that the crypto space fundamentally stands for: democracy, power to the unbanked and underbanked, transnationalism, a truly global and shared economy, all of which many would consider financial utopia.

Yet no utopia has ever come into existence, and no extreme can sustainably progress toward its end goal unchecked. The enfants terribles in history usually meet an unhappy end unless they adapt to the realities of a less-than-utopian world. A golden mean between CeFi and DeFi must be met — both “factions” stand to benefit from it, as does the whole space.

Related: Was 2020 a ‘DeFi year,’ and what is expected from the sector in 2021? Experts answer

What DeFi can take from CeFi

A lack of comprehensive and effective security auditing in DeFi has led to millions of dollars worth lost from hacks, which, seen through the lens of the world outside of crypto, where the CeFi–DeFi distinction is blurred, damages the reputation of the entire space. Within crypto, this has very much positioned DeFi as an enfant terrible, and for good reason — among code bugs, flash loan attacks, system vulnerability exploits and token design issues, there were more than 20 major DeFi hacks in 2020 for an amount topping $100 million.

Thankfully, over the past months, there has been increasing acknowledgement of the importance of better auditing — and auditing in general — among larger DeFi players and their communities. This is the first step in the right direction.

Auditing for DeFi is, of course, just as nascent an occupation as the industry itself, and while this means it is not yet up to scratch, it also leaves ample room for change and improvement — perhaps even for the development of an entirely new sub-industry, complete with standards and certifications, to address this single greatest weakness of DeFi. That security auditing model and best practice can be taken straight from CeFi and adapted to incorporate DeFi’s specifics.

The next step would be financial audits, which would address potential vulnerabilities from a market perspective. This would be a collaborative effort between traditional and digital finance, and it’s something that CeFi players are leading the conversation in.

With these issues covered, another DeFi challenge would be partially tackled: attracting institutional investment to guarantee long-term development. While DeFi’s anonymity, by default, inhibits large-scale capital inflows because institutional investors cannot enter into contractual obligations with an anonymous counterparty, better security would facilitate a relationship between CeFi and DeFi in this direction.

A similar issue emerges on the retail side, which is just as important in driving mass adoption. The complexity of most DeFi platforms makes them inaccessible due to the high degree of technical knowledge required to use them. This limits DeFi platforms’ chances of expanding their user base, in turn, making a breakthrough into the mainstream unlikely and stunting their growth potential. CeFi products, on the other hand, enjoy much greater adoption rates due to their user-friendliness and proximity to traditional digital banking tools. These formats can be transferred onto DeFi protocols to enhance user acquisition and retention.

Furthermore, there are currently ways in which DeFi is successfully adopting centralized components, and the fact that a substantial amount of wealth on DeFi platforms is held in stablecoins — the products of centralized organizations — is perhaps the best case in point. As such, stablecoins serve as a much-needed bridge between DeFi and CeFi.

What DeFi can give CeFi

There is much to admire about what DeFi has brought to the table this year, not least that it has presented opportunities for the unbanked to access banking services, offering the democratization that our entire space aims for.

Though blamed for most hacks, flash loans are DeFi’s absolute hallmark in that they are a prime example of how finance can be effectively democratized. In enabling anyone to operate like a whale and take advantage of market situations that would otherwise be unavailable to them as a smaller investor, they eliminate the phenomenon of the rich getting richer, while the less-wealthy stagnate due to a lack of financial tools or liquidity at opportune moments. With CeFi’s greater security and user-friendliness, these opportunities can be amplified and presented to an entire market of potential unbanked and underbanked users.

There are also positives to take from some of the DeFi projects that collapsed this year. The “right to fail” is an important part of the learning process for an industry as young as ours that makes us more resistant, even anti-fragile. This is in sharp contrast with traditional finance, where mistakes, big and small, are swept up thanks to governments and central banks’ interventionist policies. I believe this to be the fundamental flaw of the current financial system. Our space demonstrates how the true forces of the market are played out, and DeFi, with its many hacks over the past year, has illustrated this perfectly. I admire the likes of Harvest, Value DeFi and Yam for flagging their mistakes. It goes to show that the whole crypto space, in general, is maturing and growing stronger.

As DeFi currently stands, it is unlikely to spill over the borders of its own niche despite the steep climb we witnessed in 2020. It will plateau over the coming year as some projects fail and disappear, while others adapt and put into motion mechanisms to self-regulate, giving way to a more sustainable modus operandi that is better aligned with CeFi’s.

A combination of DeFi’s ideals — a system without vertical authorities where proceedings are democratically and transparently agreed upon by the community — and the security measures and ease of use brought by CeFi will facilitate mass crypto adoption to ultimately yield a fairer financial environment.
